that does seem like a lot but like, i'm not the only person using this. there are 12 other people using this server, so even if bandwidth and hosting brought it up to $100/month of maintenance costs, that's still worth it imo. $8 a month per person to share a media library and storage is insane

right now i don't have to pay for hosting, electricity, or bandwidth, but if i did i think i would *still* save money on subscriptions:
assuming i have an electricity rate of 17.3 cents per kilowatt hour, my server draws an average 250W, i pay only $36/month in electricity

maybe i'm just an insane discord baby who can't handle older stuff, idk. i wish matrix was good, i wish anything was usable. the only things that seem to be both good and not scraping you are signal or something but i don't want to go to only group chats for communication with many friends

when i say irc has no features, i expect a modern chat space thingy to at least have replies or built in image support but irc relies off of "just upload to your bouncer and let the client decide if it embeds or not. btw good luck finding a good client"
