We hope others will test these (and other?) mechanisms in diverse plant systems, so that we can figure out how plants handle these stressful coastal habitats.

Previous work showed that height and flowering time differences let coastal monkeyflowers reduce salt spray exposure. We tested two later-acting mechanisms: after salt spray lands on the plant, coastals reduce its entry into leaf tissue, and prevent necrosis once salt gets in, better than inlands.

Salt spray is an understudied abiotic stress that drives local adaptation in coastal habitats. We developed and tested a framework for three mechanisms of salt spray adaptation: avoidance, exclusion, and tissue tolerance.
