We don’t have nearly as a robust safety net. People are struggling with healthcare costs, childcare, and college. Sweden provides all of those universally cost free or heavily subsidized. Their unemployment benefits and parental leave DWARF the US.

I’m very familiar with Swedish culture. I live there for 2-3 months each year. They have a booming entrepreneurship culture because of a roughly translated saying that “the social safety allows people to be less vulnerable to risk taking.”

There is no reason why, in a society which has reached the general level of wealth ours has, the first kind of security should not be guaranteed to all without endangering general freedom; that is: some minimum of food, shelter and clothing, sufficient to preserve health.
