Which fish fits your Friday mood? 🐟
The first fish option. Likely supposed to be a flounder, it resembles a spotted dog more than anything else. Its face looks very happy. As if the dog is being presented with a treat. The second fish is fully grimacing, its mouth downturned and teeth visible. It is blue with painful-looking red eyes. The third fish is very round— potato-shaped. Seen from above, it looks up at the viewer with perfectly round eyes, perfectly round pupils, and a vacant expression. Nevertheless, it appears to be smiling. No thoughts, only vibes. A rather nervous-looking… whale? It’s supposed to be a whale for sure, but it’s also very furry-looking. Long sideburns sweep up behind the creature’s face like two massive cat ears. A tuft of fur extends below the creature’s chin. It has an adorable cat-like nose. It’s a whale-cat of some sort, and it’s clearly hiding some embarrassing secret.

How does your cultural identity shape your creative expression?
In the painting Untitled (2019), we see a group of people lost at sea, wearing red life jackets and waving their arms, swimming to survive. There is no boat, safety net, or someone trying to save them: they are alone, struggling not to drown metaphorically and literally. The movement of their arms and the pools of vivid watercolor give a sense of loss, danger, and anxiety. A quote by the artist: "I am from many places. I live with that duality and multiplicity in my mind, and in my soul, and in my body."

Nocturnal birders in western North America may encounter several species of nightjar, from Common Poorwills to Chuck-will's-widow. But, alas, this Western Whip-poor-won’t lives only in our daydreams. 💭🪶
