The government says they want to help more disabled people into work. But cuts could push people away from work.

1 in 4 of the people we help with PIP already work, and many use PIP to enable them to work. Losing support will make work harder for many.

Third, scrapping the Work Capability Assessment means you'll have to get PIP to get the health element of Universal Credit.

For those who lose PIP, this could mean losing the UC health element too - a total loss of up to £10k+ a year, plus any passported benefits like Carer’s Allowance.

Those affected by changes to PIP will lose an average of £4.5k per year. For our debt clients receiving PIP, that represents 20% of their income, on average.

We modelled the impact of losing PIP daily living on a group of our clients (surplus = monthly income minus expenditure):

Women, older people and those with certain health conditions, including back pain and arthritis, are less likely to meet the new 4 point threshold for PIP.

If this disproportionate impact is by design, no rationale has been given by the gov.

First, plans to cut PIP could affect around 1.6 million people, including 13% of those receiving the higher rate of PIP.

Under new rules, you’ll have to get at least 4 points in one ‘activity’ to qualify for the PIP daily living component. Sarah could lose PIP when these rules come into place:

When the government talk about 'more people getting support to move into work', they often mean requiring people to meet with work coaches.

But a focus on ticking boxes means work coaches often aren't providing meaningful support to help people move into/progress in work. Great report
