Awaiting the fun while I cower my cellar, lol. Jim, I found a great retirement gig for you in Norway. This guy was carving decorations and replicas of artifacts for the Viking museum. He did the carvings over the doorway and is working on some side planks.

Back home again, here are a few more scenes from my recent Norway trip. Info in the alt text.
The exquisite scenery never ends. This is the town of Reine, which Norwegian’s voted as the prettiest town in the Lofoten Islands. As if everything wasn’t beautiful enough, you see it twice with the mirror image in the water. Another view of Reine. I didn’t expect the temps to be in the mid 60s in the Arctic Circle! Other than one day of downpours when we were in Oslo, we had sunny, beautiful weather every day. A fisherman‘s hut with a grassy roof (“torvtaks”) which are pretty common in the small villages. The prow of a Viking long boat with the dragons head carving. we went to a Viking museum which had a recreation of a long house on the site, where artifacts had been excavated

The Lofoten region of Norway is spectacular!

View from hotel window in Svolvaer. The water is so clear it offers up a mirror image of everything. And it was a beautiful sunny day, thank the deities! Another view from our Svolvaer hotel in the Lofoten archipelago. Fishermen’s cabins in Svolvaer - altho these are replicas. Door from the mediaeval Trondenes Church in Harstad, Norway featuring heavy wooden doors embellished with wrought iron fixtures. There are runes said to be viking carved in the door.

Yay Norway! We have a day and a half in Oslo before heading north. Tiring travels to get here but seems well worth it so far.
The spectacular Oslo Opera & Ballet - designed by Snøhetta, it looks like an iceberg rising out of the water. You can climb onto the roof. Across from the Opera House we watched hearty souls diving and swimming in fairly frigid waters. We learned that the diving place is also a sauna. Quite a contrast with the modern opera house. A pretty vessel in Oslo’s waterfront.

Oh that sucks. I don't think you should crap on young people's dreams like that - the world breaks us fast enough on its own. Made me think of one of my favorite poems by Vachel Lindsay.

While in Boston over the weekend, I went to see the “The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks,” an immersive AV doc about the NASA missions to the moon from 1969-72. This pic shows a future astronaut watching the landing of the lunar module.
A young boy is sitting on a floor reflecting the moon’s surface, totally absorbed in a clip of the landing of the lunar module. The immersive experience makes it appear that he’s on the moon.

My niece had a stroke yesterday. She’s in her mid 50s w no risk factors.

Because she got help right away, the damage is much less than it might’ve been. She’s doing well and should only need speech therapy. Please learn stroke signs. Strokes don’t just happen to the elderly.

I made a quick trip to a Venetian palazzo yesterday! If you visit Boston, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum should definitely be on your to-do list, it’s such a special place.
Courtyard in the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum featuring beautiful seasonally changing gardens with fountains, Greek and Roman sculptures, and an ancient Roman mosaic. All the galleries in the museum have windows or balconies overlooking the courtyard.

Visited RISD Museum this week & learned one of my favorite artists - Rose B. Simpson - is a graduate. She is a Tewa sculptor of Khaʼpʼoe Ówîngeh, a mixed-media artist who lives and works in Santa Clara Pueblo, N.M. Here are two of her works, which she often refers to as ancestors. #art #sculpture
Reincarnation by Rose B. Simpson. Ceramic bust in red and white clay. From the RISD description: This ungendered figure is adorned with striped markings on the face and chest and embellishments at the neck and ears. Two circular openings in the base suggest the space between the arms and torso or voids where breasts or lungs would be. Simpson describes Reincarnation’s “confident and naturally beautiful” subject as “demonstrating a knowing that is based on experience behind and beyond this lifetime” underscores the allusion to rebirth and regeneration in the title. Shard by Rose B. Simpson. Ceramic bust. From the RISD description: A geometric pattern plays across the face of this figure, repeating on the body and the thin cylindrical forms jutting from the sides of its head. This pattern developed when Simpson recognized that the linoleum flooring in many modern Indigenous homes appears similar to shards of ceramics made by ancient ancestors from the homelands surrounding Santa Clara Pueblo, where she lives.
