I've researched hegemonic masculinity quite a lot, and I'm of two minds on this.
On one hand, yes, Pretti was man who helped and protected others, and so earned respect. The man-o-sphere folks should hear this.
On the other hand, these are not really "manly" virtues; they are human virtues.

That said, the first step toward defusing the hegemonic masculinity that underlies the right is to offer an alternative. They want respect, but seem to think they deserve it by virtue of their gender. It's a tempting story for adolescents especially. Showing them how to get respect honestly is vital
