The way I see it, one is choice forced upon you, whereas a boycott is a choice made by the people against the actions of another. There are ways to access books made by boycotted authors without giving them your money. Public libraries for one. Boycotting is a statement, Banning is forced control.

I think it's less about banning ideas and more boycotting certain authors. I would never ban a book, but I feel it is important to call out certain authors that engage or promote homophobic, xenophobic, or racist rhetoric. Basically, a "keep this in mind" notion.
