First edition in a contemporary binding, with ownership inscriptions dated less than eight weeks after publication. In each volume is the ownership inscription, dated 20 March 1813, of Sir Maurice FitzGerald, 18th Knight of Kerry (1774-1849). FitzGerald was the husband of Maria La Touche, a cousin by marriage of Mary La Touche. Austen records in her letters that she visited and was visited by Mary and her daughter Miss East when Austen was in London in 1811, 1814 and 1815, straddling the publication of Pride and Prejudice. The three volumes, standing upright. Volume 1, open at title page with ownership inscription. Volume 1, open at page 1 ('It is a truth universally acknowledged, ...')

For #WyrdWednesday 's insect topic, an image from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (1705) by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) depicting the metamorphosis of butterflies. Still in the #earlymodern period, insects were believed to be spontaneously generated from mud, which is disproved here.

Enamel card tray (Bilston, c1770) #c18th #c18 #18thc
Rectangular tray with a bright green border with raised gold leaf scrollwork and shells, central white panel with sprays of multicoloured flowers. The tray rests on four green feet with little gold blobs around their bases and has a looped handle attached to the top (same green border with gold bits, central white panel with flowers). About 7 in/18 cm long, 1 in/2 cm high, 3.5 in/9 cm deep. Some restoration and repair, but large pieces for everyday use like this one are rare survivals in any condition (unlike wee boxes, which are abundant)

Printed in red and black on three sheets, fixed and folded, concertina-fashion, to form the pages. I recall reading somewhere recently that the extent of the Calendar Riots over the lost days may be exaggerated. Anyone? Pasted within contemporary 'Dutch' floral wrappers. Extremities rubbed and marked, faded contemporary ownership inscription (Daniel Jones?) to upper wrapper, occasional manuscript annotations.

This dress was worn by a lady of high rank during the mourning period for Madame Thérèse d'Autriche, mother of the Emperor and Queen of France.
