For the “following” tab to stop showing random stuff, you can go to Settings > Content & media > Following feed preferences. Then turn off “show samples” at the bottom. I also turn off “reposts”. Then this tab only shows you content from people you follow.

Seems to be a defective hardware batch or bug in the software. People are apparently having the same issues with their replacements. I’m hoping they fix it soon so I can get one too🤞
