On behalf of the new institution, PCU’s Reverend Professor Dr Upolu Luma Vaai signed partnership MOUs with the Fiji Ministry of Education, Fiji Ministry of i-Taukei Affairs, United Nations Development Program and Tetra Tech, to support new rural community learning centres.

On behalf of the new institution, PCU’s Reverend Professor Dr Upolu Luma Vaai signed partnership MOUs with the Fiji Ministry of Education, Fiji Ministry of i-Taukei Affairs, United Nations Development Program and Tetra Tech, to support new rural community learning centres.
Ecumenical service this morning at the Pacific Theological College in Suva, as PTC transforms its structure into the Pasifika Communities University. To be launched this week, PCU will restructure theological education and development through “whole of life” Pasifika philosophy and spirituality.

The Front de Liberation National Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) will hold a convention this Saturday, 26 April. The gathering of Union Caledonienne and other members of independence coalition will feature report to members and re-set a negotiating mandate for the FLNKS delegation to next week's talks.

However, Union Calédonienne Secretary General Dominique Fochi says: “To build the future, we must not rush to create short-term solutions that will cause problems in the long term. So we mustn’t drag our feet, but we shouldn’t rush into things. We want to create a win-win situation.”

French Overseas Minister Manuel Valls will soon arrive in #NewCaledonia to push forward negotiations, hoping to strike a deal between supporters and opponents of independence: “The objective of this phase will be to reach an overall agreement on the institutional future of New Caledonia.”

Fiji and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to fast-track negotiations for a landmark regional Economic Partnership Agreement between UAE and Pacific Island countries. Draft framework proposals will be discussed at the next Pacific Trade Ministers’ Meeting in July.

In New Caledonia, the FLNKS has released a statement following the latest round of political status talks. While accepting the French State’s draft agreement as the basis for the negotiations due to start on 29 April, the statement suggests the independence movement won’t be rushed into a deal.

As a journalist, I write features as a freelancer for a range of publications. As media organisations sack permanent staff, they rely on journos like me to plug the gap. But many companies, including Nine Publishing, refuse to negotiate fair rates, annual increases and a signed agreement. @withmeaa

The #FLNKS independence coalition issued a social media post earlier this week, pushing back on Loyalist calls to “unfreeze” voting rights for the provincial assemblies and Congress of New Caledonia. The vexed question of citizenship and voting is a central negotiating agenda in this week’s talks.

Reflecting on last year’s youth revolt, independence politician Pierre-Chanel Tutugoro of Union Calédonienne noted: "Young people will not benefit from this budget. Where we have made cuts is always in the youth sector. We have the impression that we have an anti-Kanak, anti-islander budget.”

This week, the Congress of New Caledonia adopted an austerity budget, responding to the economic fallout of six months of clashes in 2024 between Kanak protestors and French security forces. With businesses failing and thousands of people unemployed, the Ponga government is cutting public services.
