Stress of not comprehending, unable to focus due to overwhelming life distractions, guilt for not being as “well-read” as they are told they should be, incidentally reading problematic content without knowing, on and on. Books are not a cure all for all. They are not a good place for all.

Unfortunately there are many drawbacks to reading, you just haven’t experienced them yourself. Asking questions about that disconnect is reasonable, but I hope you move forward asking more openly rather than immediately putting the onus on the non-readers.

I would say the concern and bafflement belongs with the education system then. Yes, reading written text is a chore for many and impossible for some. Reading comprehension is a challenge for a vast majority of of the population. That’s not their fault. I get being sad about that.

Bafflement and concern imply they are in distress or somehow incompetent, when really they just aren’t like you.

What I was saying is that those benefits have been found in non-reading activities as well. To say reading written word is the *best* way to get these benefits is centered on your opinion. Not everyone has your interests and that doesn’t make them worthy of worry for it.

I never stated that literacy wasn’t significant nor that there isn’t reason to be upset about a decline in interest. I was saying that holding reading paper books as elite above all other forms of consuming stories isn’t a good take. Nor is talking down about people with no interest in that activity

The impulse comes from knowing people of all walks with all levels of access and interest. Dyslexic father, blind cousin, best friend with ADHD, just a few ways that written word stories are less accessible. But everyone of those people find ways to get stories. Their methods are not less valuable

It’s my opinion that storytelling and consuming stories is what’s important and good for you, not the methodology. Saying the best valid method for sharing stories is solely reading written words is what I see as limiting and snobbish, diminishing all other forms of storytelling for this one.

All things connected to playing certain video game types and low impact exercises. As an avid reader myself, the take of “people who don’t want to read” are somehow less-than-normal is an elitist take lacking in nuance and empathy.

Plenty of people get their storytelling through other means than reading (or listening) to books. Movies, TV shows, serial podcasts, etc are all valid means to consume stories. Reading is not the superior choice, it’s just one of many.

Did it 5 years ago because I was so blind the contacts I needed didn’t go to my strength. The surgeon I had literally wrote the book on the procedure I got (PRK) and everything went so smoothly. I didn’t have much choice, but I’ll do it again in 20 years when my vision starts to deteriorate again.

He’s another good egg, and also alarmingly talented. Ah to be the Gods’ favorite.

If 10mg could make me that talented I’d have a new daily habit 😭

Saw an amazing comment on a trailer that said “Damn, this sure would look great animated” and it summed up my thoughts exactly.

And he’s so damn FAST! He’s got a full set, hilarious and thought provoking, ready to go the day the news drops!

Gotta start at 1.5x and work my way up to 2.0x over like a chapter or two😂 I swear the 1.0x sounds like they slowed down the narrator!

Gotta go A Spear Cuts Through Water. Amazing narrative style and every character is just perfection.

I was hoping it would be “Wing” but apparently the popular opinion is Skeet. 😬
