One fun thing the @dreadnode.bsky.social CTI agent is unearthing from the Great Firewall leaks is how many of the employees of this Chinese deep-packet inspection/malware intro/censorship company are also part-time (PhD) students

If it can work for them, it can work for me!

Today I recall a meeting with the German Foreign Office‘s resource security unit who over my objections told me that Nord Stream 2 is a great idea and Putin is motivated by money and would never break a gas delivery deal.

We have wasted so much time with incompetent folks but we can still come back

My "This is not a coup d‘etat"-statement has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my statement.

The quality of propaganda pics made by German DoD has improved remarkably with the recent leadership changes. More weapons systems, more elaborate staging, cooler poses…

Also, finally a German general who seems to still hit the gym and doesn’t look like he smells of day-old beef stew and accounting

Gell-Mann Amnesia - more relevant than ever in the age of AI

"Models produce subpar answers when asked about the field I am an expert in but perform amazing on things I know nothing about" - using them for knowledge retrieval is mid. Leverage the power of reasoning and probability machines instead

But rather than admit it, the CCP decided to pass off factory-made steel as produced "by the people", fostering a narrative of how the grit and ingenuity of the Chinese people enabled this breakthrough despite limits on resources and hostile sanctions. There is nothing new under the sun.

Thinking of the Great Leap forward. In 1955 Mao directed China to catch up with the United States (which was sanctioning China) in steel production. So they launched a "mass steel campaign" that saw red guards melt down utensils to make steel in backyard furnaces. Only their product was worthless

You can @ me on this when you can tell me which is the American F-22 fighter jet and which is the Chinese J-20, built on stolen designs

Nice suprise on a Saturday: apparently I had a major role in avoiding the government shutdown. At least Bloomberg put a picture of my girlfriend and I on the frontpage *above* the headline.

It‘s one thing to intellectually know that Syria was once a great empire. Another to see its relics. How much things have gone downhill due to clan mentality and factionalism…

Can‘t wait for reelections. This government was bad, though so were its predecessors. Excited to go voting!

But your graph is consumer prices with a set rate for the duration of the contract. With industrial electricity users, they have to buy ad-hoc at a constantly changing price. So the industrial spot prices are having wild and expensive spikes and hurting industry, because renewables aren’t reliable.

Academia is suffering from bloated administration. The majority of my classes were taught by part-time faculty, even as administrative headcount went up.

It not only takes resources away from teaching and research but also reduces productively used time and makes innovation much more difficult.

When @ridt.bsky.social , @jags.bsky.social ,and @invisig0th.bsky.social persuaded me to submit a talk to LABScon I didn’t think it would be accepted and didn’t dream I would get an honorable mention in the race for best speaker… Still doesn’t feel real. Thank you three!

See you all in the Tesseract

Less than 24 hours before @ridt.bsky.social and I will start teaching our "Foundations of Cybersecurity“ class. I spent the weekend prepping 30 raspberry pis with Kali Linux and just cycled to pick up the corresponding cases.

Cannot wait to meet the students and get started!

Testing a variety of Raspberry Pi equipment - especially cases- today. It’s for a "Foundations of Cybersecurity" class I will co-teach with @ridt.bsky.social where each of our 26 students will be equipped with a Kali Linux pi (since most otherwise use Macs).

What is your favorite Pi case?
