he effectively spent 11 years of his life looking for someone he doesnt remember the face of. the real Apolo could've stood in front of him and he would've been as valid to Cain as anyone else who vaguely resembles him.

In my mind, Cain's memories of Apolo slowly deteriorate to a point where he no loger remembers his face, his hair, his eyes. he's just gone like that. But Cain never quite realizes this, he thinks he remembers him perfectly until he's shown a picture and that's when it clicks
