yeah but in a double-loaded corridor building there's still a single point of failure for egress: the hallway on the fire floor. if the fire makes it out into the hallway before people are able to evacuate, people on the fire floor will be just as trapped - and in a max-scale building that's dozens

the numbers get even rougher when you consider how common it is to wishlist and buy on sale - the actual price paid for many indie games has got to be just shockingly low
October 23, 2025 at 6:23 PM
a lot of people are in there saying 'why should AAA cost 100 bucks when i'm getting 100 hours out of a 30 dollar indie game'. while that does absolutely make sense, the secret is that the 30 dollar indie game should probably cost 50 dollars. poor pricing power strikes at every level of the industry!

incredibly corrosive how small war makes 'bravery' belong to trigger-pullers when Big War requires massive amounts of courage from supporting personnel.

always thinking about the idea that during WW1 they'd pull the bravest men out of the assault waves for deadlier jobs like 'signaller' or 'runner'

not devereaux but my understanding is that hardtack's niche was preservation on the move. a static peasant community with well-built granaries could preserve grain more or less indefinitely, but supplies for a ship or army camp would have very little protection against moisture or vermin.

the black hand itself is obviously the worst but nothing from the triggerpullers themselves has ever stood out as particularly ’Greater Serbia’ to me - they say all the things they’d say if they were genuine, well-meaning yugoslavists, who did exist in significant numbers
September 25, 2025 at 3:21 AM
sure on the first part but I mean there wasn’t even a King Alexander in Princip’s lifetime, it took ten years of contention for yugoslavia to finally fall to dictatorship. feels almost like blaming the Kiel mutineers for late Weimar to me, or something like that.

cavitation is absolutely brutal shit but outside of the trunk (where there's simply no path that isn't full of organs, blood vessels and bone) there's a lot of arm/shoulder/leg space that's pure muscle and you can get something fairly close to a TV-style through-and-through
September 23, 2025 at 9:51 PM
there are exceptions to be fair. not just the insane cases who win a Medal of Honor/VC/equivalent by fighting through 40 gunshot wounds or whatever, but like, even as recently as GWOT you'd see rifle wounds to extremities that medical personnel met with 'here's a bandaid, take a week off'

you can certainly argue that putting yourself on an email list for a protest is stupid/unnecessary (i know i do not want to be on anybody’s email list in general) but if your position is that it‘s too *risky*, i mean, it’s probably less risky than “being super active on bluesky”!

yeah posing with crew-served weapons at an airshow or something isn’t really abnormal and doesn’t say much about a family’s relationship to guns elsewhere.

feels strange to frame it as “a desire to establish“ a more repressive state. it’s not like Saigon had better intentions re: repression, they just lacked the position of strength (and ultimately victory) that allowed Hanoi to be so repressive. they worked hard to suck under the constraints they had!

“dense living is too expensive. the land is too valuable. also there’s a glut of empty apartments because everyone hates being in the city.”

then why is the land so valuable
September 9, 2025 at 12:10 PM
yeah. people thought zohran was charming but i don't think many were calling him a 'generational talent' until after the fact, because how else do you explain the playbook actually working for once? 'random state legislator turns mayoral race into a Big Moment, wins landslide" is a movie plot

it’s nice seeing my baby nephew regularly but I’ve already had two horrible bouts of the daycare plague, I can’t imagine how awful it is for his parents lol

Xbox is sort of an odd one out here tbf. the xbox division as a whole is profitable, they just sell the consoles at a cost and make it back selling the games

bad anthem but I’ve always been skeptical of this take.

the simplest reading of the “hireling and slave” line IMO is that it’s in the same vein as the “horde of slaves” in La Marseillaise - that people only fight for a monarch for money/coercion, contrasted with republican citizen-soldiers
September 1, 2025 at 3:40 PM
the GWOT has obviously done a lot to destabilize the US but a lot of people make the Weimar comparison because it’s hard to grasp how huge the societal difference is between “<1% of the population are war veterans” and “1 in 3 men are war veterans”
August 28, 2025 at 4:42 PM
well yeah, nobody really builds rockets to survive falling over.
August 27, 2025 at 1:44 AM
i mean it’s the second stage that’s causing the problems you’re probably gonna have to wait a bit longer than that
August 26, 2025 at 11:29 PM
Not religious but I’ve never really understood this particular form letter complaint because Christians, at least, are constantly claiming that somebody’s seen god. Your objection isn’t “nobody’s seen him” but “I don’t think those accounts are credible”
August 26, 2025 at 9:40 PM
doesn’t mean judicial review is good, of course! lots of missteps in the constitution.
August 26, 2025 at 12:59 AM
i mean it’s not really “based on next to nothing”, is it. the constitution places all judicial power in the courts + says that the constitution is the supreme law of the land. “the courts can decide that the constitution overrules legislation” is the obvious conclusion of those statements.
