Two people: the juxtaposition of the contrasting expressions adds complications to the composition, making it more interesting to view. Maybe you can do something swirly and abstract in the bg to develop that connection or disconnection more.

I guess I’m supporting your take since that subplot was an invention of Coppola’s version, even though Coppola didn’t write the script itself. I also see what you’re saying about the visuals, too.

The whole invention and focus on the romance between D and Mina is what ruined the Coppola version for me. Of all the wonderful plots and subplots in the book, why LB would continue that seems so uninformed.
