ah, i understand. i can totally see people misusing and abusing the term just to shame others and avoid sharing a shred of human empathy.

once when i was getting to know a castmate, they said they were sexually assault by their uncle as a baby. it was a total bombshell. i wasn’t unsympathetic to their story, but i was definitely taken aback and didn’t know what to say except “i’m so sorry.” afterward, i had to act normal in-class.

well, that’s why making the distinction between the two terms is *extremely* important. people need to have self-awareness and think before they speak. should they be silent about their problems? not necessarily. however, they should consider what they’re sharing and with whom they’re sharing with.

@xlefthandpathx.bsky.social i think sometimes people confuse venting with trauma dumping. venting is sharing frustrations with someone you trust to reduce your stress. trauma dumping is oversharing without the other person's consent or sharing during inappropriate times.

@xlefthandpathx.bsky.social it’s the difference between asking a close friend “something heavy has been weighing on my mind. can i talk to you about it?” vs. sharing a traumatic story on a first date with someone you barely know.

i don’t think term is intended to be harmful—it’s just a way to describe communication that can be unhealthy for both the speaker and the listener. it’s not meant to shame people for having trauma, but to show the importance of having boundaries and appropriate timing when discussing heavy stories.
