The time of the Mari Lwyd approaches!
One of Wales` more unique festive customs sees a decorated horse`s skull carried from door to door, where its bearers challenge each household to engage in a duel of verse and wit for entry and, most importantly, beer!

On the night of his birth, Pryderi was stolen from his cradle by some unseen beast, his mother falsely accused of infanticide.
Meanwhile, lord Teyrnon, losing livestock to a clawed creature, kept vigil in his stable. He drove off the monster, finding a newborn left on the threshold.

Efnysien is the baby-murdering, animal-mutilating, anti-hero of the Second Branch. His actions near eradicated the Irish, and cost his own brother's life.

Legends tells of a sunken lost land off the coast of Wales, Cantre'r Gwaelod. It was ruled over by Gwyddno Garanhir, the grandfather of the great bard Taliesin.
Gwyddno also guarded a magic hamper that could turn a single meal into enough food to feed a hundred!

In the Welsh Otherworld of Annwn, there is a magical cauldron that only feeds the brave, leaving cowards and traitors to starve.
The heat that warms the cauldron is provided by the breath of nine maidens, an unusual twist on the 'nine sorceresses' archetype.

Welsh still uses the word 'Gwyddbwyll' for modern chess, but there was once a much older game, similar to the Irish Fidchell.
Amongst the Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain was a magical Gwyddbwyll board, made of gold and silver, who's enchanted pieces would play by themselves.

You might not think from looking at it, but Grassholm Island was reputed to be a site of great revelry!
According to the Mabinogion, after the bloody slaughter of the war in Ireland, Manawydan and the other survivors of the war spent eighty years feasting here!

In Welsh mythology, white is traditionally the colour of the beasts of Annwn, the Otherworld.
It is the colour of Rhiannon's magical steed, the enchanted boar tracked by Pryderi and Manawydan, and the white-furred, red-eared Cŵn Annwn, dubbed "Hell Hounds" by Christian storytellers.

When the witch Ceridwen gave birth to a cursed child, he was too beautiful for her to kill, so she cast him into the sea in a basket.
The abandoned babe was found and taken in by Elffin ap Gwyddno. As he was picked up, the child began to sing, in perfect rhythm and meter.

Two stories from the Mabinogion are driven narratively by dream sequences. Rhonabwy sleeps for three days and dreams of a chess game against King Arthur, and Macsen Wledig dreams of a journey to far away lands in search of a beautiful maiden.

One of the oldest stories of King Arthur is found in The Dream of Rhonabwy, in the Mabinogion. While Rhonabwy sleeps, he has a vision of Arthur playing chess against his follower, Owain, to the backdrop of the Battle of Badon.

So I did a full redesign of Pryderi, the main character of the game!
There’s nothing says “Celtic nobility” quite like Tartan - but after the third play tester asked why he was wearing a bathrobe, it was clear something had to change!

Before Games of Thrones, before Lord of the Rings, before even Geoffrey of Monmouth compiled the legends of King Arthur - before all of these, came the Mabinogion.

Localisation for Tales from the Mabinogion is quite an undertaking. With narration in both English and Welsh, including passages of original Welsh poetry, it comes with more than its fair share of challenges!
《玛比诺吉昂传奇》本地化工作是一项相当艰巨的任务。
游戏包含英语与威尔士语的双语旁白,并收录了部分威尔士语诗词原文,为项目增添了不少难度和挑战。

As Pryderi and his companions returned from their war in Ireland, a mystical fog fell across the land, leaving it ruined, barren of life.
The sorcerer Llwyd ap Cil Coed had summoned the curse, a vengeance for indignities committed against his friend, Gwawl, many years previously.

Death in the Mabinogion is sometimes but a temporary inconvenience! When the giant Bendigeidfran is slain in battle, his severed head continues talking and jesting with his companions for a full eighty years, before finally being buried looking out to sea to watch for invaders.

Vampires and ghouls begone! These Halloween horrors have nothing on the nightmarish monstrosities of the Book of Taliesin!
The cover for this gorgeously illustrated version of Kat Godeu beautifully shows some of the terrifying creatures of Annwn, the Otherworld.

The magic cauldron, that classic symbol of Halloween, makes many appearances in the Mabinogion, where it has often been considered an early precursor to the Holy Grail of Arthurian legend.

I often see these loophole like 'windows' positioned directly on castle walls, like these on Cardiff Castle. But how would they actually be used? They're way too high to shoot through from ground level... Tagging @richardnevell.bsky.social from the suggestion of another user!

Like many strong, defiant female characters, Arianrhod has often been described as a 'witch', who sought to curse her own son. But a more nuanced reading sees her 'curses' as a means for her to assert power and autonomy in a world that sought to deny her both.

The Englynion y Beddau - the Verses of the Graves - tell the final resting places of many of the great heroes of Welsh legend. They contain what is possibly the oldest reference to King Arthur, describing his grave as "one of the mysteries of the world".
