That's a fascinating thought! I read a paper by Cliff and Jason, "Knowledge-Based Vision and Simple Visual Machines," which touches on themes related to the ecological approach to machine vision. It's a path that hasn't been fully explored. It seems Gibson was well ahead of his times in some ways :)
