This time, Euijoo lets himself get swept along with the tide instead of trying to fight it. He's pretty sure he read once that the best way out of a riptide is to let it sweep you along its course before you struggle your way free. He surrenders to his pack's probing, and hopes to hell that the current will spit him out in one piece on the other side.

Nicholas dumps Fuma on the bed. He goes with an oof, his momentum pulling Nicholas down with him. "Sorry," he says. "You're having a hard time because of me, huh?" "S'fine," Nicholas says. He knows he should move, but it feels so nice to be off his feet. Fuma's bed is comfortable, and Fuma's arm is still slung across Nicholas' shoulder. In the quiet of night, it feels easy to admit, "I like seeing this side of you. Thank you for coming along tonight." "Of course," Fuma says. And then, "I wish you would ask for things more often." Nicholas laughs quietly. If Fuma knew everything that Nicholas wants, he wouldn't say that so easily.

no wipwednesday today bc i literally just posted my longest fic ever (?!??!), but in case anyone is interested here's the final form this snippet ended up taking:
The weight of Nicholas' words settles in Euijoo's chest, winding through his ribcage and constricting his lungs. He remembers the feeling of helplessness as he cried on the plane; the way his hands trembled afterward as he sat in his childhood home and fought to remember how to breathe. But— "It's different this time," he says. "We'll make it work. I know we will." Nicholas smiles. He rests his hand on Euijoo's wrist, just a light touch. Outside, the drip of rain in the gutter is like the ticking of a clock. Steadily marching toward their parting, sure, but also toward their inevitable reunion. The bubble they created for themselves was always destined to burst, but in its place they'll be able to cultivate something even better. Something sturdy, with roots sunk deep into the ground, able to withstand the wind and rain and emerge stronger than before.

It takes a few more minutes for Euijoo to finish putting everything away. When he finally sinks into a chair, he does so with a sigh. He grabs the closest can of beer and pops it open, already anticipating the cool relief of his first sip. What he gets instead is a face full of carbonated foam. He sits there in shock, silently dripping, as Nicholas bursts into laughter. "Damn," Nicholas says, "I wish I'd gotten that on video."

Euijoo keeps half an eye on Nicholas' progress as he continues watering the garden. The hill from the village up to Euijoo's house isn't particularly steep, but the incline is long and gradual. Euijoo knows from experience that it's absolutely killer when riding a bike. Sure enough, Nicholas starts wobbling as he draws level with where Euijoo's truck is parked. The moment he reaches the porch he puts down the kick stand, swings his leg over the bike, and collapses dramatically on the ground. "You're a cruel, cruel man, Byun Euijoo," he laments. "Forcing me to suffer out of spite, all because I joked about your precious truck one time." "You're the one who said you wanted to exercise more," Euijoo points out. "Or are you the type to skip leg day at the gym?" Nicholas groans as he sits up. "So heartless," he continues, as if he hadn't heard Euijoo. "I'm going to die of heatstroke, and it will be all your fault. You always pretend to be sooo nice, but in reality—" Euijoo turns the hose, spraying him directly in the face. "Yah!" Nicholas splutters. He tries to duck away, but Euijoo keeps the hose trained on him. Nicholas yelps, bringing up his arms to try to protect his face. "What the hell?" "I thought you were dying of heatstroke," Euijoo says mildly. "I'm just helping cool you down."

The second Euijoo steps through his front door, though, all the words he'd had prepared disappear from his head. Nicholas is sitting on the couch, back ramrod straight and legs at a precise 90 degree angle, while Euijoo's cat perches delicately on his lap. Nicholas turns desperate, pleading eyes in Euijoo's direction and says, "Help." Euijoo bursts into laughter. "You can just shove her off," he says, but Nicholas shakes his head furiously. "No way, she has /claws/."
