Staff for 2 cats but known to take photos of other subjects. Local history, military history and local military history. Oh and a bit of railway history as well.

Easily distracted with research rabbitholes.

Sussexshire
This is Arundel Castle to the south, which I couldn't get in the wide shot

#HillfortsWednesday. Snip of a 1837 Manor map showing Wolsonbury Hill north of Brighton, Sussex.

Apparently it had a Roman Encampment? 🤔@durotrigesdig.bsky.social @romanpalace.bsky.social @mattpope.bsky.social

This, absolutely this!

One of my favourite responses from an Archive was from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who I'd contacted regarding a Victorian Railway Contractor. I suspect they don't get many such enquiries 😄

Thanks very much👍.

This photo is apparantly from 1921 and ignoring the mahoosive shield, has a number of what look to be quite large calibre rifles on display?

Wind on to today and that little office is an excellent Lebanese takeawy called Alushi. Highly recommended even if they are a bit heavy on the garlic😀

Come 1927 that office was a 'Time Keeper's Office

Just to the right of this entrance, is a now closed stairway which in 1882 had a Watchman's Office under it

So I reshot it this morning at 5:50, mounting my camera up on a 4m high pole to capture the whole scene and to have the camera as square to the elevation as possible.

Will anyone care or notice this wasn't a tilted image? Probably not

My previous image of this entrance didn't really cover the whole area and all my fellow researchers were in the image

@loreandordure.com @navalairhistory.com

Here's an example of my OCD. I recently got this drawing and immediately noticed the lintel above the dark area was unfinished. (This is the now closed entrance to the Cab Rd)

This line is the London - Brghton one and I've been amassing files on it for a few years now. Ironically only one local tithe map was produced before the railway arrived but I fortunately tracked down a 1818 parish map for my area.

Here's a snip of that 1794 Kew map and just look at it 😍

Stolen from FB.

An excellent display for #VEDay though the Indian flag is noticably absent.

I'll finish with an image of the rear of one of the earlier structures showing a small shrine / temple.

Every pillbox should have one to appease the concrete gods

Near the end of the headland I unexpectedly spotted a more sturdy structure just off the road. It seemed to be outside a closed/ abandoned compound.

So having located these, I carried on my ride around the area and headed over to the mouth of the Hoi An river

They seemed to have been built around a steel frame but as I'm on holiday and had got up at 5am to see the sunrise, more detailed inspection wasn't on my agenda.

(here's an obligatory sunrise pic)

These face S, with a park behind so presumably there was a military / government building here in the 60s.

They're quite a mix of materials with concrete, stone, possible railway rails and PSP sheeting.
