There would also be a MPi-AK-74N that would be chambered in the lighter 5.45x39 introduced in the 80’s but would not see wide adoption before the dissolution of the GDR.

As the improved AKM came out of Russia the Germans also improved their rifle.

The MPi-km is made with cheaper stamped metal instead of the milled construction of the AK-47 and MPi-k. the main difference from the AKM however is the plastic stock, grip, and hand guard reducing weight.

Contrary to popular belief the NVA did not use the standard soviet AK instead electing to produce their own similar “copy” but with their own materials.

The MPi-K was the main rifle of the GDR throughout it’s existence. Early versions were almost identical to the AK-47 except for German markings.

The gear itself is nothing special, an entrenching tool, canteen, gas mask, rest equipment, and more would be standard issue.

Perhaps the most noticeable part of an NVA soldier is his M1956 helmet. Instead of the traditional rounded helmet the designers went with a more angular approach, giving the helmet a more “weird” look
