Seems like progress is being made through the Keep Android Open campaign. Google is saying that now there will be a way to still sideload applications without being a part of their verification program, but they want to make it harder.

Keep up the pressure!

Google will preserve sideloading for power users, but it hasn’t decided how that will work yet.

If you want to install an app from a developer you trust, you should be able to do that regardless of what your OS maker thinks.

Google wants to make sure all Android apps you use are approved by them no matter what.

Contact your gov and tell them no!

As this club is starting, we're using it as an opportunity to see how far you can go with free and open source software as well as open or decentralized platforms.

That's why our social media is only on Bluesky and Mastodon - to respect people by default!

Hopefully that won't have to change 😅

Our next meeting is on Wed, October 29 at 7:30 PM ET (Virtual)!

Join us as we hang out. If you don't bring a topic then we may be talking about smartphones.

At the end we will cover calls to action so that we can continue to chip away at community needs!
