Ok nm I'm back because what the everlasting eff is this candycane thing in the corner? I didn't link to the ad as I don't want to give views, I'm sure it'll be pushed all over, I watched a bit to see that they used the ai in the commercial (which they did). Are the cars real? Why care?

Quoted passage as follows: So prevalent was the practice of abortion, that miscarriages were punished as criminal offenses. The penalty prescribed by Father Zalvidea for the Indian woman who had suffered a miscarriage consisted of "shaving the head, flogging for fifteen subsequent days, iron on the feet for three months, and having to appear every Sunday in church, on the steps leading up to the altar, with a hideous painted wooden child in her arms."

Quoted passage as follows: "With the best theological intentions in the world, the Franciscan padres eliminated Indians with the effectiveness of Nazis operating concentration camps. From 1776 to 1834, they baptized 4,404 Indians in the Mission San Juan Capistrano and buried 3,227; while in the Mission Santa Ynez they did somewhat better, having baptized 757 and buried 519. In not a single Mission did the number of Indian births equal the number of Indian deaths. During the entire period of Mission rule, from 1769 to 1834, the Franciscans baptized 53,600 adult Indians and buried 37,000. The mortality rates were so high that the Missions were completely dependent on new conversations to maintain the neophyte population which never, at any period, exceeded the peak figure of 20, 300 reached in 1805. So far as the Indians were concerned, the chain of Missions along the coast might be best described as a series of picturesque charnel house.

In #book, I started reading a book I couldn't remember why I put on #library hold and whelp, it has opinions. The book in question is "Southern California Country" by Carey McWilliams, the book I have is the second printing from 1946. Some warnings are below for various things but First page:
Passage from the book "Southern California Country" by Carey McWilliams, second printing 1946. The author is discussing how he plans to approach the book. Quoted passage as follows: I have therefore deliberately ignored Cabrillo and Drake, Onate and Vizcaino, Portola and Kino. Should this brusque procedure offend the tender sensibilities of chronic collectors of Californiana, I nearly point to the library of volumes about the Spanish explorations. In the same spirit, I have sought not to tell the story of the Missons not in the conventional manner, that is, from the point of view of the Franciscans, but from the point of view of the real parties of interest, namely, the Indians of Southern California. Similarly, in dealing with that almost completely misunderstood period, "the days before the gringo came", I have tried to examine, with a degree of realism, the actual structure of social classes in Alta California. Much of the celebrated "romance" of early Southern California is pretty valid stuff at best, but, for those chronically addicted to this sort of thing, I refer to the romances of Stewart Edward White, Gertrude Athernon, and Helen Hunt Jackson. The chapter on the Indians of Southern California is largely based upon the monumental research of DR S.F Cook of the University of California. Full details can be obtained from his fascinating volumes: The Conflict Between the California Indian and White Civilization (in four volumes, 1943); and Population Trends Among the California Mission Indians (1940).

Ok now that there’s about 4” of the wet stuff with me coming down, we’ve lost 4 branches of the small trees and I’m not sure about what’s happening with the tall ones… See, now is when I’d worry.

Also hello hello to those following back! Have a wire tree I just finished. I liked the scribble-ness of the "leaves" as I was doing it, but I'm not sure now. Yes, it is attached to a piece of petrified wood. Dino came from thingiverse.
