Nuanced messages about nationhood are on display from the people of Tamworth, with Aethelflaed, Queen of Murcia in the 900s, flying a Union Jack

New books arrived and a) I am happy with the accurate picture they give of my nerdy interests, and b) thanks to whoever here I picked up the recommendations from

An amazing weekend in Doncaster with ArtBomb festival at the Unitarian churching hosting the debut of Hey! Festival for poetry in the market square and all sorts of unexpected delights

Yesterday was a day of beautiful encounters with Quaker friends in the wild - first with the @quaker.org.uk team at Christian Aid’s 80th anniversary at Westminster Abbey, and then @alastairmci.bsky.social “preaching” at Kairos - perhaps the only bar in town last night to hear the Lord’s Prayer

I got the new album from @jenniferballads.bsky.social in the post and a line in the sleeve notes shows how she and I are singing from the same hymn sheet, her for folk, me for church “I believe you should try to get everywhere like water, make the tradition undeniable, support people to participate”

Today included a planning meeting for @greenbeltfestival.bsky.social with a brilliant bunch of Unitarians, then a gathering to thank the InterFaith Network at the end of 37 years of connection building, then @alexevansuk.bsky.social at Kairos to talk about ‘the religion shaped hole’

A moving event this afternoon to say #ThankYouIFNUK - the InterFaith Network was started in 1987 when it was a bold move to bring faith groups together on an equal footing. In the room today were countless thousands of hours of civic elbow grease, and the friendship and harmony built over many years

If I can spot a typo in the EHRC statement while reading it late on a Friday on my phone, it’s possible they’ve rushed it a bit..?

I am delighted to be collaborating with @al-barrett.bsky.social on this - since starting to read Hospicing Modernity a couple of years ago I’ve been wanting to read it with people holding church-ish responsibility, and now the time has come.
Open to all who feel drawn to it.

The calm before… Currently in Birmingham ahead of staff, ministers, and tomorrow 300 other Unitarians for our annual assembly.
It feels like an important time to gather in person

I think a lot of @danthompson33.bsky.social’s rules for social art can be useful in creating spiritual communities too

The press have caught up with this awful story of a violent police raid on a Quaker meeting house - front page of the Sunday Times today.

Beautiful line from a Quaker Elder “The only resistance I could put up was to make tea and drink it in front of them without offering them any.”

A great visit to Manchester for a meeting of our national Unitarian trustees sandwiched between this blessing of a mass paupers grave that’s now beneath a park, and then a brilliant service at Cross St Unitarian chapel led by @unimuse.bsky.social followed by delicious lunch made by the community 🙏

A wonderful morning at @hmcoxford.bsky.social in discussions of future research, practice, and community in how the college’s dissenting past might inform the spiritual imagination of the future. These words above the door, ‘to truth, to liberty, to religion’ feel vitally important to these times

Excited to dive into this story of @camerados-org.bsky.social by the tremendous Maff Potts, a fellow traveller in the work of making a better world one cup of tea at a time

Thanks @davidbent.bsky.social for a handy list of what to do to prevent being overwhelmed by The State of Things. I suspect it’s good advice for life in general too, not just unrelenting political horror

If you are looking for a gluten free, vegan bake this Christmas (ie for gatherings with unknown dietary reqs) you can make @nigella.bsky.social’s famous lemon polenta cake nominally festive by switching the lemon for clementine. Glad to bake for assembled Unitarians at HQ this afternoon 🎄

A little taster (it is refreshingly short and simple)

Worth looking at his words in the original @nestauk.bsky.social report to see how unpleasant his language is (I had to check it wasn’t a spoof from @mrhenrymorris.bsky.social).

Easy to see this as a cry for help from Boris and his “aching spiritual void… seeking solace in what is self destructive”

A real joy to hold a copy of David Benjamin Blower’s new book with @scmpress.bsky.social in my hands - and to start thinking of all the people I want to recommend it to. Definitely one that is not just for those who are used to reading theology books

On the train home from a wet and windy Birmingham for a meeting of @ukunitarian.bsky.social Executive Committee, grateful for work with far-sighted, sharp-minded, practical, kind, and good-humoured people, holding the questions of how we serve the world well with this free and inquiring faith

Yes, I looked back at my early tweets when I first came on here and realised that my nerdery about science publishing back then has been replaced by church, but the interest in dumplings and consciousness remain. (And I haven’t got my head around how much older I am)

Aww, I just checked some of my oldest ones and it feels a bit like time travel. I suppose I’m holding my own mental
archive.org of my consciousness as a late 20s digital publishing nerd, and reading these unearths it
