Ulrike Franke, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations: I will be keeping an eye on whether Europe's decisionmakers and populace will adapt to the new realities we now live in. My columns this year have outlined this new world we live in: The trans- Atlantic relationship as we know it has ended. Europe is facing attacks from Russia. Germany is becoming a military_power, as is Poland. The private sector is becoming an actor in geopolitics in a way it hasn't for a long time. Consciously, most decisionmakers understand these developments, and they are increasingly sinking in for everyday people as well. And yet, we are in a liminal moment where on a subconscious level, people still want to hold on to the old world. The changes are not really understood yet. Many hold out hope that the old order might return. Or else, they simply struggle to adapt to a world in which power relationships have changed and actors behave differently than before. It is always difficult to say goodbye to what one considers normal, but this is exactly what is needed now. Europe needs to act according to the new realities it faces, not how it wishes the world to be. There is no point in holding out hope that the U.S. will return to the trans-Atlantic relationship. The acceptance of international laws, rules and norms is decreasing. Germany's standing within Europe, and most likely its relationship with France, will change due to changes in relative military power. The faster Europeans internalize these changes, the faster we will be able to shape our reality, rather than just endure it. There is now a window of opportunity for changes—in the structure of the EU or the functioning of NATO, for example-that Europe should use to its advantage.

Because it’s not just Bari Weiss’ CBS asking this question—in the last few months, I’ve been approached by half a dozen different shows looking to ‘debate’ the same topic.

I even got a request from NPR-distributed “Open to Debate” to see if I’d weigh in on “Has Feminism Hurt Women?”
