Filming on location is not a new unheard of concept in media production. We followed all the rules, rotoing out street names/address numbers, not including people/cars.
It was meant to be photoreal, and the simplest, most in-scope way to do that was to film it.

Perhaps it was a little naive of me and everyone else on the team to think about the art before the fandom, but I also think we need to stop normalizing this behavior and giving scapegoats to the people doing these things.

The filming location itself has nothing to do with the story, geologically, and wasn't even filmed in the same state Digital Circus takes place in.
It's just a visual, not an ARG or scavenger hunt. Everything that's essential to the story will be presented in the show itself.
