I hope you get some relief.

I have recently gone through some health issues that, due to anxiety, have quickly vacillated between "this will be gone in a few minutes" and "I have to go to an emergency room." Even if you get smarter about which is correct, that doesn't make it easier to experience.

Simple seasoning, little bit of olive oil, grilled. Same for good quality steelhead trout.

Yea, so many good games for it, including GMless ones w/enough player power/prompts.

Despite common impression that free-form is daunting w/o more structure, it can be a good starting experience b/c of a lack of system mastery required. Emphasizes play as conversation & trains that "judging" skill.

Yep! Many newcomers w/expectations all over the place.

My 3/4-assed guess is the majority are helped most by *just doing it*. Majority of the rest are helped most by being directed to games that are easiest to GM. No idea how big remaining slice is, but I'm very in favor of not leaving them behind.

The materials outline that it's specifically for people who want to GM, have sought out support for doing so, but still can't bring themselves to do it. That's not bad at all, but it's an unusually specific audience.

Yea, I poked around, saw it's basically a course that creates a safe space + feedback system for reluctant GM's to experiment & grow skills w/o actually running games.

Which is extremely strange to me. So original context sailed past me, but if that's an experience people want, more power to them!

Yea, I see that now. That's a weird context to me, so I didn't expect that! My original response was purely about the most useful approach to DLJ. Sorry for the confusion.

That's fair.

For 101, I think that's super bloated. Especially referencing specific systems a 1st time GM won't know/care about. Reads more like an attempt at conference presentation to in-industry vets.

If you're giving people the DLJ operation, it's practical to give them how/why/best practices.

It varies, but most reliable for me is determining the type of uncertainty the players enjoy relative to the fictional scenario. Because a lot of systems allow you the ability to determine that for yourself. And a lot of players have preferences whether they realize it or not.

There are a zillion WAYS to Describe, Listen, and Judge. You can do each of those things and still not connect or have other issues. Most games and, in my experience, most players, still require you to DLJ in a way that engenders trust...

Keep them in a jar together and the candy corn absorbs the peanut flavor for even more OH MY GOD PEOPLE.
October 30, 2023 at 9:05 PM
To me, you earn it by reliably expressing the Type of Uncertainty. One act/roll can be about chopping one goblin head. Or how many before putting yourself at risk. Or how many THIS TURN. If the players like the Type of Uncertainty in question, you earn their trust - most of the rest works itself out

It's impossible (and awful) to describe EVERYTHING. Which means even the minesweeperiest of minesweeper "old school" experiences is still a significant exercise in trust. HOW to Describe, Listen, and Judge to best earn all the players' trust is that big hurdle...

I keep rediscovering that an impartial referee is rarely real. Even in an ultimate sandbox w/a high granularity map, not every GM is prepared to, say, analyze the physics of a grain windmill or whatever else is organically encountered. What is described IS what the GM perceives as important...

I think "St. Louis sliced" isn't really a thing. Panera Bread (St. Louis Bread Co.) sold massive desserty ass bagels. Nobody wanted a whole one, but half means somebody doesn't get the crusty treat top. So they chuck 'em in a loaf slicer. Nobody here wants a regular, good bagel sliced that way.

Cosmic Crisp is the correct answer. Sleeper: Ruby Frost.

The secret is they don't *have* beards, they *are* beards. Tie and trim as you might, there is always only more beard.

I recently found a world-building podcast called Your Rivers Are Wrong that's fun and comforting.

They touch on world-building for many pursuits instead of only rpgs (which are included!), so it's a bit different from your traditional tabletop podcast.

My mom is really fond of a chicken lo mein recipe that noticeably includes peanut butter in the sauce (and peanuts sprinkled over, which I skip, personally).

I really struggle to imagine something in the jam neighborhood as a complement - BUT! maybe pickled plums or something like that would work.
