Are there actually any qualified librarians left? When I joined the library service in Norfolk 15 years ago our branch had a full time librarian and a library manager. Now there is a manager who oversees three libraries and two or three ‘community librarians’ who cover the county.

I grew up on a very lovely council estate, which is now largely owned by rentiers and let to students. The beautiful ‘through lounges’ (a wonder in the 1950s) are divided to cram in more renters. I must stop’ I’m depressing myself.
