Just sent this to a reporter. It’s a real shame.
When the nation faces a crisis there is one national leader that we turn to for consolation, that's the president. During moments of crisis the nation looks to the president to help us to understand the tragedy. Typically American presidents do this by invoking our national values and explaining to the nation that if we stay true to our values, then our values will see us through the tragedy. It's an elevating and uniting form of speechmaking that gives noble purpose to our suffering. Presidential rhetoric scholars call this the "priestly role of the president" and note that presidents like Lincoln at Gettysburg or Reagan after the Challenger disaster or George W. Bush after 9/11 were able to speak to the moment with such grace and humility that they inspired public confidence that the nation could withstand the tragedy. They invoked our values in ways that united the nation, showing real leadership under pressure. That is the best form of presidential rhetoric. Donald Trump has not demonstrated that he is capable of displaying that kind of rhetorical leadership. He hasn't been able to talk about our values in an elevating way, he hasn't sought to unite the nation, and he hasn't tried to help us make sense of the many senseless tragedies we've experienced while he has been president.
