Agreed. I configure systems to the max and use them until they're no longer working well. My current desktop is vintage 2015 and still works fine since I got lots of RAM, storage, and top-end processor

Some carriers are doing that already, with their "bring it back" programs. Two year service contract, plus monthly fee for the device, which you swap when contract renews.

Vendors of Android phones are even worse. Many only offer a couple of years of OS support, even if the device would have no problem with newer versions.
