@johncarlbaker.bsky.social But down the list are actual democratic policies. Too much to distinguish/refute. Mamdani’s playbook is working, and not just in NYC. He has ruthlessly stayed on message - economic populism funded by taxing the rich. If the party is to survive, we must get on board ASAP.

Howso? That is quite a serious allegation. Unlike Jones, Hasan steadfastly stands with 16,500 murdered children as reported by an Israeli paper yesterday. Please try to be more responsible with your words and focus on the victims of the terrible crime.

@marcishore.bsky.social @timothysnyder.bsky.social Prof Snyder - I’m still processing your exile. Thank you for your clarity over the years. Prof Shore made a chilling comparison. America is now the Titanic - sinkable. I am afraid, so I must be thinking clearly. Stay safe. youtu.be/IXR9PByA9SY?...

@dachshundwizard.bsky.social Are those home theater chairs? I used to sneak 8-lb George into the movies all the time! He passed a few years ago. His last film was Top Gun: Maverick. His favorite film was How to Train Your Dragon. He saw every MCU movie through Avengers: Endgame. I miss him to bits.

I appreciate that dachshund barking is protective, but it was so embarrassing walking on the street when little tiny George (R.I.P.) threw fits. Once a woman passerby said kindly “I understand. I have Doxies too.”

@ernietedeschi.bsky.social How will retaliatory tariffs impact? (China 84%). IIRC Trump’s 2018 tariffs caused soybean exports to decline ~70% primarily due to China’s targeted retaliation. China may ban US films (2d largest market). Canadian boycotts are targeting red states (e.g., KY bourbon).

Whoa. Are China and Japan selling the $2 trillion US treasuries they own??!

@brendanvduke.bsky.social

No one could foresee that Trump would use a ridiculous made-up formula to calculate foreign tariffs. Then divide by 2 and call it a discount. No different than the made-up hurricane path he drew with a Sharpie. Can’t fault CNBC for missing this. 😊

Professor Snyder - thank you for trying to warn the country. When I watched your interviews, I thought you were describing the worst case scenario; that perhaps you were being rhetorical to shock us into listening. I trust you, so I believed you. I just didn’t think it would get this bad so quickly.

Does Trump’s threat to cancel government contracts extend to PW clients (EO, Sec 3)? Could govt contracts negotiated by PW be at risk for cancellation if the client (e.g., Amazon) doesn’t drop PW? If even remotely plausible, wouldn’t Bezos lean on PW to capitulate?

Isn’t it the case that under a shutdown, Trump has authority to close agencies/furlough (not fire) workers he deems non-essential with no judicial recourse? Furloughed workers cannot take another job. Are we willing to ask 1M+ workers to go without income for 6-9 months at the behest of Russ Vought?

March 21, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Yes. But under a shutdown, Trump could circumvent judicial review. He would have unlimited power to shut down agencies and fire workers he deemed “non-essential.” Schumer said several GOP senators warned him it was a trap. Trump intended to keep whatever agencies he wanted closed for 6-9 months.

I looked at the distribution by state. Many red states did not accept Obamacare to expand Medicaid. For those that did, the percentage of whites is much higher than national averages - WV (86%); KY (74%). This suggests that the largest beneficiaries of Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion are white.

Can we all agree that a warrantless arrest and detention of a legal resident, NO MATTER THE REASON, is (another) step toward authoritarianism? Passions run impossibly high on both sides of the Palestinian issue, including mine! It is in part why Trump won. Is it worth losing our democracy over?
March 10, 2025 at 7:58 PM
I think so! Though I have a brilliant, well-read Zimbabwean friend who resisted reading P2025. He lived under a dictator so he sees those tendencies in Trump. He came here as a teenager and reveres his adopted country. I think it was too painful to let go of the American myth so he looked away.
