I think you have two routes to go down - but your kid a starter set and let him figure it out (with you or with friends or both, idk how old he is) or find a beginner friendly game locally or online to get a better idea of what it entails.

Basically, it’s all about telling a story together and the (admittedly large) pile of rules serve to add unpredictable elements to the story for the players to react to.

As for rules, if there’s no one to teach you as you play, there’s a wealth of good YouTube videos and tutorials online that can help you out.

There are D&D starter sets you can buy, it comes with a pre-written adventure to play and some dice and stuff. But IMO opinion is finding a couple of fun people to play with - maybe ur kid has some friends he could invite?
