We also discuss some of the antecedents and outcomes of merging across these literatures (e.g., merging is typically associated with better relationship outcomes, but not always -- too much closeness can be bad for a relationship). (3/4)

In the paper, we attempt to put these literatures into conversation in a way that is accessible for students in particular. We suggest that merging can result in increased similarity, increased differentiation, or something *emergent* -- more than just the combination of the two partners. (2/4)
