LWF welcomes the announcement that Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally will be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. She will be the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and will be the first woman to hold the office.

The Christian Council in Sweden invited church and ecumenical leaders, including LWF General Secretary Rev. Dr Anne Burghardt, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Stockholm Conference on Life and Work.

LWF congratulates Rev. Yehiel Curry who has been elected as the new presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Curry is the first Black presiding bishop of the ELCA.

What’s one thing you wish you learned in school about gender justice but never did?

In early July, 22 students from 15 LWF member churches across Asia gathered in Malaysia for a deep dive into theology, gender justice and leadership education.

The LWF joined civil society advocates in Seville calling for a fairer global economic system for the benefit of people and the planet. The march came at the end of a two day Civil Society Forum ahead of the 4th UN Conference on Financing for Development.

In 2024, more than 99% of LWF World Service staff worked in the countries we serve, and over half are refugees themselves.

During the last strategic period (2019 to 2024), the LWF World Service cumulatively supported more than 16 million people.

Israeli forces have fired inside the grounds of the Anglican Ah-Ahli Hospital (Gaza), partner to the LWF’s Augusta Victoria Hospital. We join the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem in condemning the attack and reiterate calls to stop all attacks on civilians, and medical and humanitarian institutions.

The LWF Global Mission Consultation 2025 has opened in Taiwan with deep reflection and lively dialogue. Hosted by the Lutheran churches in Taiwan, the gathering brings together LWF member churches to ask questions about renewing mission in a wounded world.

Did you know that indigenous communities in the Orinoco Delta are accessible only by boat? They often struggle with flooding, unsafe drinking water, and limited access to education. The LWF is working with local leaders to help and build long-term resilience.

Throwback Thursday (1964)

Delegates at the second All Asia Lutheran Conference, in Ranchi, India. The series of regional conferences that the LWF began in 1952 continues to date. Today the LWF Asia includes 54 member churches with over 12 million members in 17 countries.

LWF Vice-President for Africa Ms Susannah Telewoda (Liberia) opened the Christian part of the 27 October 1986 World Day of Peace prayers in Assisi. After the UN’s declaration of the International Year of Peace, Pope John Paul II gathered religious leaders to pray.

80 years ago today, German Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed at the Flossenbürg concentration camp by Nazis. As a pastor, theologian, and dissident, Bonhoeffer exemplified the courage to live his faith through times of darkness.

Throwback Thursday (1979)

The LWF Cambodia program started operations in 1979 to respond to the humanitarian crisis there. Starting with food distribution, the program would expand in the mid-1990s to community development work. It became a localized NGO in 2010.
