That night, both women lay in bed in their respective homes.

The woman thinks of Pagliacci; while her struggles remain, this chance encounter has given her hope to carry on. She is glad.

Pagliacci stares at the ceiling. She hopes to someday be meaningful to someone. Until then, the show goes on.

For the first time in as long as she can recall, the woman feels comforted. It is not the fire of life rekindled in her heart, but a small spark, just enough to gently warm her. She opens her arms, and the two share a friendly embrace in the summer twilight.

Once more, Pagliacci has brought joy.

The woman thinks of her own life, of the various masks she wears each day. Flat imitations of herself. Careful efforts to avoid spreading her sorrow to others. She realizes that in every forced smile, every dishonest assurance, every laugh turned to sobs, a fragment of Pagliacci roosts within her.

The woman is surprised by this. Pagliacci seemed so whimsical and upbeat during her performance only moments before! How could she put on such a fine show while feeling so low?

Explains Pagliacci: "She is a mask I put on. My struggles are not hers to share. When I become her, I can briefly forget."

When the woman finishes explaining herself, Pagliacci gives a wry smile. "I understand how you feel," she says. "Lately, it feels like I've been drained of my pleasure as well. I once reveled in the joy of my audiences. Now, I feel like I only perform in hopes that others can be happy in my stead."

After the show, the woman sits on the street corner and laments her inability to feel truly satisfied with life. Suddenly, she hears the squeak of clown shoes approaching -- it's Pagliacci herself. "Are you okay, ma'am?" Pagliacci asks. The woman explains her woes as Pagliacci sits down beside her.
