In the early aughts, Mike Elliot revealed a rejected design for seriously-underappreciated MTG character Belbe. I find it funny that he lists all these reasons why this got cut, but I feel like my real objection here is that this card feels WAY too good.

spotted at a menards recently. THIS is what you want to call your chalk color?

they're looking forward to the perfected form: you can return and advance to crab because the entire continuum is crab

DOUBLE MASTERS 2022 has only a little new artwork outside a bonus sheet, and some replacements remain odd. The new Deathbringer Liege is fine, butu the Drew Tucker original was RIGHT THERE AND OKAY. Why change it?! Whatever.

BALDUR'S GATE: EXTRAS

COMMANDER LEGENDS: BATTLE FOR BALDUR'S GATE

I don't know DnD or anything DnD-related all that well. So I assume these characters are cool and this art is a good representation of any of them...? Sure. I saw at least one reused piece of art here, too, Contact Other Plane.

Magic is *mostly* better for its updated wording and stuff, but I miss the old Furnace of Rath.

STREETS OF NEW CAPENNA: EXTRAS

Everything that applies to the previous post also applies to this one. Seriously, I love the look of New Capenna and many of these designs are {R}{R}{R}. WotC clearly agrees! They made two more New Capenna sets!

Then accidentally skinned over them for some reason...?

STREETS OF NEW CAPENNA

I LOVE ART DECO SHIT SO MUCH. This was VERY hard to cut down to just four.

I know some people probably think these modern sets don't fit with Magic, but I think this style is far enough removed from the present that it doesn't hit my no-go zone, unlike Duskmourn.

KAMIGAWA: NEON DYNASTY

So, was it a good idea to replace the old Japanese folklore with Japanese-flavored cyberpunk? Good question. I have no real answer, though. Certainly not one that fits in this space.

I know this person probably did not name themself after THE Barrin Magicthegathering but I saw this and my eyes lit up anyway.

To round out the 2021 releases, here's some fun stuff from 2021 SECRET LAIRs.

Truth be told, a lot of the 2021 Secret Lairs looked really nice and the numbers weren't as high as they would get later. However, they did also feature tie-ins with a Riot Games property, which is inexcusable.

CRIMSON VOW: EXTRAS

WotC also printed something called "Innistrad: Double Feature" which literally just showed the cards from both sets in black and white. WEAK. There was some Dracula tie-in, too, which was significantly cooler.

Didn't find much worth commenting on in the Midnight Hunt extras, so on to INNISTRAD: CRIMSON VOW!

I'm not a huge fan of Innistrad. So you can probably tell that this is where things get to be a bit of a pain in the neck.

I wonder if this'll get WotC to get their priorities straight again.

INNISTRAD: MIDNIGHT HUNT

Oh boy! A two-set stay on Innistrad! You know, this is as close as the game had to a block for a while.

FORGOTTEN REALMS: EXTRAS

A neat thing this set did was include flavor text on the basic lands. They do this *very* rarely.
November 28, 2025 at 8:22 AM
ADVENTURES IN THE FORGOTTEN REALMS is Magic's first proper crossover set. Er, I guess, look, DnD has had Magic modules before and they're both owned by Wizards so are th-- YES. It'd be like asking if Chrono Trigger was a Final Fantasy just because they're both from Squaresoft.
November 28, 2025 at 4:34 AM
Okay, I done goofed. I meant to note 2020 SECRET LAIR cards I liked after all the 2020 sets, but forgot I finished all the 2020 releases already.

I was not impressed with anything from 2019 tbh.

MODERN HORIZONS 2 is full of an insane amount of old Magic throwbacks, even as far back as THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME! Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar is here and not a blatant joke character! Needless to say, that makes me delighted.

STRIXHAVEN: EXTRAS

by which I mostly mean "Mystical Archive," which are some of the nicer "masterpiece series" cards out there while still being somewhat elaborate. A damn sight nicer than the borders on the Invocations, I'll tell you that for free...!
November 27, 2025 at 7:24 AM
STRIXHAVEN: SCHOOL OF MAGES because every magical setting needs a wizards' school I guess. Could be worse. Could be a literal Harry Potter crossover. (If they do it I am going to feed Chris Cocks to himself feet-first.)

Doesn't have a "shove into a locker" card so 0/10.
November 27, 2025 at 7:10 AM
Releasing alongside Strixhaven we have COMMANDER 2021. Five decks, one each for the five "enemy" color pairs (that are finally reaching parity with the five well-supported "allied" pairs!) - and ergo one for each of the five Strixhaven schools.
