NVIDIA drivers have traditionally been closed source with has created friction with the Linux community, but they are moving towards open source drivers.
The Linux support in general has also been improving, e.g. I just started using Wayland where a few months back that did not work for me at all.

Surprised about gaming issues. Besides their own installer, desktop environment and easy access to gaming software it's basically Ubuntu. Used to work for me, but it's been a while.
Maybe just try some distros to see what works for you. Just try to avoid too much of what we call "distro hopping" 😁

Be aware that for the longest time NVIDIA Linux driver support has not been up to par with AMD, although it has improved a lot recently. I'm using NVIDIA without issues. Ubuntu is a safe choice if you are new to Linux. There are also some gaming oriented distros like Pop!_Os. And +1 to Timeshift.
