probably! but I think it's often more insidious than that, because the "action" in question might be something innocent like not conforming to some group behaviour, or a simple missed social cue. I think that's why the "reason" isn't revealed, because they know it's dumb and they'd be embarrassed

I think it happens because a person stands to lose social capital if they stay friendly with someone that the group has singled out for removal, even if the reason has no substance. the dumbass thing is that the reason is rarely questioned. I can't say I understand it well 🥲

this has happened to me (at least noticeably) twice, and both times the involved person refused to say why they were ostracizing me. later in life I think that they didn't have any good reason other than someone said I was weird, and that made me "unlikeable" regardless of how well I treated others
