The tender and sensuous violin is our narrator and protagonist Scheherazade - the witty Sultana who saves her own life by telling the Sultan a fantastical tale every night, saving the ending of one night’s story for the tale of tomorrow

the opening theme, grim and domineering, represents the Sultan, a man who repeats the cycles of marrying a virgin and killing her the next day
