But also, fundamentally, I agree. Tiktok is demon technology and kids need to read more and reading needs to be taught and focused on and short-form content is absolute hell :V

Basically, booktok is kinda eugh, I don't use it, never have, but also it's kinda liberating? Like, I'd rather have people get reading through booktok than not at all, and I'd rather booktok highlight potential hidden gems than have that exclusively be in the hands of some weighty editors.

A lot of best sellers are going to just be comfort reads because people who read for entertainment read for entertainment, getting through on pure volume of interest. And other times when something is a bestseller, it's because it truly is a masterpiece that engages everyone.

There's entire terms for this. Penny Dreadfuls and Sensation Novels for example, were at the time criticized with the same points you highlighted in your video.

This is fundamentally true for a bunch of reasons (short-form video *is* a unique and novel form of brain rot never seen in history), but one thing I found interesting is that if you look at the NYT best sellers lists from decades ago, it's full of books no-one has ever heard of.
