She presses their foreheads together, aligning the bridges of their noses. He could kiss her. He wants to kiss her. And yet, every time he thinks to tilt his head and bring their lips together, he is caught on some new lovely detail of her. A freckle on her cheekbone. The blackness of her lashes. The way a stray lock of hair curls at her jawline like a whorl of silver ink. The whole summer’s worth of longing rises up within him, pressurized, overwarm, cracking the breakwaters of his self-restraint. But he can’t bring himself to close the distance. This moment is crystalline—one wrong move, and he’ll shatter it. So, he settles for the featherlight, the gossamer. Tiny touches and mingled breaths. He plucks that errant lock of hair from her jaw and twists it about his forefinger. “I’m afraid,” she whispers. He draws away slightly, taking in the whole of her countenance. She seems wilted. Frayed. Teeming with apprehension. “Of what?” “That I’m going to wake up.”

#ChrobinWeek2024 said "Return", and I took that personally. Curious Letters is back with a brand-new chapter, and the climax of this arc to boot! There will be guts, of both the physical and metaphorical variety.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: Girl, as Calamity A great, gaping darkness has opened in the earth, and Robin is falling through it, limbs limp and stomach drawn with vertigo, the sky growing smaller and smaller overhead, like an eye narrowing shut. Sara, her confidant and friend, is a Grimleal acolyte. An architect of the wards. A murderer of children. And how many children have you sent to their graves? taunts a voice within Robin, some hateful chimera of Grima’s and her own. That was different. Since the war ended, Robin has cloven her life into two distinct selves: the Robin at the mercy of her fate, and the Robin who defies it, teeth grit and sword bared. Perhaps there is a third Robin, the girl her mother tried to raise in the wet green belly of Ylisse, but she is lost to time. She does not matter in this moment.
