Another concern with organized sports is that, while it keeps players physically active, it is otherwise a generally sedentary experience for nearly everyone else. Most sports fans sit while they watch the game. It has been suggested that events like the Olympics inspire people to take up sports, but the evidence suggests that watching sports, on TV or live at a venue, has no significant impact on the promotion of physical activity and is linked to significantly higher incidence of sedentary behavior.

He was proud of their matches, and he’d begun to suspect that they were so good that they could haul ordinary citizens off their sofas. “I think for the people who don’t watch tennis, probably thanks to these kind of matches, [they will] start to watch tennis or even practice it.” Sinner said it was one of the best matches he’d ever played.

The first set lasted an outrageous 94 minutes. For context, many two-set matches in the tournament had concluded well within that time frame. If Alcaraz left that set with any regrets, it would be the 4-4 game, where he had five break points but capitalized on none.

For a player eager to work the crowd, Roland-Garros, the clay-court major, is the ideal training ground. There, in Paris, the sport has preserved some of its rakish essence. It’s the one place in the world where I have viewed best-of-five professional tennis through a fog of cigarette smoke. Tennis might be getting more international, but here the spirit remains resolutely French. Its crowds are well-schooled in the game, attuned to the merits and faults of its combatants. They are also unpredictable. To me the French crowd is like a baby: capable of baffling emotional 180s, oscillating from joy to hostility in a flash, for reasons mysterious to any third party. It communicates with a mix of whistles, howls, coos, grunts, claps, and shouted names. It is hyper-attuned to a moving ball, responding so minutely to the ebb and flow of these rallies that I sometimes wonder if I’m the one missing out on a subtlety. It will burst into solitary shouts of “ba-ba-ba-BA-ba-ba-BA-ba-ba-ba,” in an approximation of an old bullfighting tune. It will cycle through seven rounds of the Wave, even though the umpire’s stentorian s’il vous plaîts have been booming on the sound system, trying to restore dignity after the third one. And then the crowd will applaud itself to celebrate all the Waves it has just done.

Using each other to push forward is what makes these rivalries so fascinating to me

A few months later Sinner received a wild card to play the Italian Open, a 1000-level event, where he beat the American veteran Steve Johnson, then ranked No. 59 in the world. Five years later, on his podcast, Johnson happily described the misery of losing to a “super-skinny” 17-year-old. After the match he called his agent and said, “I just lost to this kid. This kid sucks. He’s terrible.” He threatened to quit tennis.

At the end of the final, which he won in four sets, Alcaraz announced his mission statement. “I came here just to enjoy, you know? To smile on court, to enjoy playing tennis,” he said. “I would say if I smile, if I have fun out there, I saw my best level, my best tennis.” [highlighted] That broad, sharky smile was a dark omen for the rest of the tour.

I open my mouth, not sure what I’m going to say, but it turns out, with Antony’s family, I have to say absolutely nothing. The two kids start talking rapidly about Formula 1, asking me a hundred questions without stopping for breath, Antony’s father offers me some coffee, and his mother squints at me, pronounces me “Too thin!” and sends two of Antony’s cousins running off to the nurse’s station to bring back some of the homemade food they brought in for the staff. Before I know it, I’ve been pushed into a chair with a steaming cup of coffee and a plate of Brazilian truffles called brigadeiro.
