I liked this piece as many others did but you should also stay away from the somehow still famous NYT parody account linked there for Palestine reasons. On that issue they are in agreement.

On the one hand, like a lot of my friends and peers I think it’s wise to decline speaking to the Times on principle. The reasons aren’t especially obscure: Palestine superabundantly, but also decades of hyper-sensationalizing crime reporting, the neverending centrist stooge’ing, all the unparody-able rest of it. On the other, though, this was not a request to write but to contribute something in the way of context, knowledge even, and I did in fact have some legit expertise on the question of Africana Studies, a discipline about which I have a lot of detailed, informed, enthusiastically ratifying things to say.

What I appreciate about the work you're doing in this book, and in your newsletter, is the way that you humanize the people you interview. Even if something is boring and terrible, like working as a health insurance price adjuster, you give them plenty of space to say their piece without getting in the way. It's a simple but very effective approach. Yeah, and that's exactly the type of story that you wouldn't be able to write if you're writing for a traditional publication. You can get a quote from somebody, let's say, who is working at a water park, like I do an interview with a guy about what it's like to work at a water park in Florida during a pandemic in the book. And you couldn't just publish an interview with a guy who works in a water park; you could include a couple of quotes from a guy like that, but it would have to be part of a bigger story, like “Here’s how people are being affected.” And that robs the guy of some of his life's energy. I find it fascinating to hear someone's whole story. The last thing in the world I want is to make anyone look stupid, except for the villains, and there are certainly no shortage of villains. It's really important to me that when we're hearing from these people being f-cked over, I don't want to go [to the person causing the harm to] get a quote like, why are you ruining this person's life? They're just gonna lie to you. It's a worthless convention of journalism to go hear from the bad guy.

The referee would have stepped in by now but they had knocked him out with a steel chair. The only others watching were either fascists themselves or the people trying to fight fascism with the power of love and kindness and they weren’t having a great go of it either. I kept trying to explain in between haymakers that we were better than this and on top of that it wasn’t likely to be ruled on favorably as far as the courts. None of it helped. I was on my knees now bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose. It spilled out of me onto the snow in a pattern that if you sort of squinted at it from the right vantage looked like a cartoon heart. See that I pointed. Look how beautiful the world can be I tried to say through my broken teeth. Alright well now he was pulling out a gun. I didn’t think we were allowed do that.

Our niece had slept over a few nights before and she’s at that age where she’s starting to watch horror movies and loves to talk about them almost to scare herself on purpose in the daylight when it's safer. She asked me what my favorite horror movie ever was and I thought about it for a minute or two and couldn’t decide on just one like I was worried about insufficiently impressing this child with my refined taste and I said well I will tell you one horror movie that has stuck with me because of how abject and mean it was and that is House of 1000 Corpses. It was made by Haverhill Massachusetts’ own Robert Bartleh Cummings I said and she said she hadn’t heard of it. I thought about pulling up More Human Than Human for her on YouTube to illustrate what the nineties were like for me and her parents more than anything but instead I said have you ever heard of the band Wet Leg and she said what and I said have you ever heard of the band Wet Leg and she said yeah. She said that she had heard of them. D___ said what band are you talking about and I sang a little of Chaise Longue with the cute accent and everything and she said oh right.
