11/ This measure suggests that some individuals perceive partisan and Brexit identities as signals of key non-cognitive skills they value in colleagues. The figures below shows that the most affectively polarized are likeliest to penalize outpartisans and reward copartisans.

10/ Before the conjoint, we ask which attribute they value most in a colleague. Most mention character or non-cognitive skills over cognitive ones (e.g., talent). We use this and a question on how likely different party supporters are to have these traits to build our measure.

8/ This does not necessarily mean that political identities trump competence at work. We find, however, that political identities moderate the positive (negative) impact of high (low) competence in the preference for a teammate at work.

7/ We find that outpartisan profiles are penalized substantially when compared to copartisans, even if less competent colleagues are even more penalized. For partisan identities (unlike in the case of Brexit) this seems driven mainly by outgroup aversion.

4/ We conduct a conjoint experiment in a survey of 2,000 employed UK citizens. After seeing one of two vignettes, respondents evaluate five pairs of hypothetical colleagues, with eight randomized attributes. Along with demographics, two attributes measure competence.
