In The Bone Chests, author and bio-archaeologist Cat Jarman scours the records and, along with the results from recent scientific studies, reconstructs the stories of the individuals whose remains survive in the six remaining chests.

When I recently read about the location of the chests I had to scour my photos to see if I had somehow captured them. I found one (pictured here).

Many visitors to Winchester Cathedral are unaware of the chests presence and significance (myself included). My own pilgrimage to Winchester was to visit the burial of Jane Austen.

But, during the civil war, six of the ten chests were destroyed. The remains scattered across the floor. This left four original chests, and two chests that were reconstructions from the latter part of the seventeenth century.
