Unfortunately there is some damage to the original so some of the text has been completely lost and other areas are impossible to make out. But, how truly wonderful it is that it has lasted so long.

Many visitors to Winchester Cathedral are unaware of the chests presence and significance (myself included). My own pilgrimage to Winchester was to visit the burial of Jane Austen.

Many visitors to Winchester Cathedral are unaware of the chests presence and significance (myself included). My own pilgrimage to Winchester was to visit the burial of Jane Austen.
But, during the civil war, six of the ten chests were destroyed. The remains scattered across the floor. This left four original chests, and two chests that were reconstructions from the latter part of the seventeenth century.
