Optical colors by random numbers

Hello everyone on Bluesky! I am a geometric abstract artist who likes optical illusions and a little randomness in my art. As for this painting, which is the centerpiece of my current show (see link in bio for details), it is titled:
Rotator IV 20241120
Acrylic on 30x30 in. stretched canvas

Tetrachromacy, my solo exhibition from earlier this year in Dallas, has opened in Houston at the Library Gallery at Lone Star College North Harris. Aug 5, 2025 - Jan 9, 2026. More info is on the home page of my website. (Link in bio.)

This series makes me consider the fallibility of memory. But I think art is basically about innovation, evolution, and realization. We should appreciate the creations of the past, but we instinctively look to the inventions that lie ahead.

The title of this painting is more of a way to identify the series than to explain it. But the title does refer to my understanding of this abstract and optical composition in terms of rays and discovery.

This piece represents a new approach to this scale which was influenced by two paintings in my last exhibition. The grid is simpler, but the colors sing more loudly!

This painting is an updated version of an older design. I doubled the number of stripes, and I used a random number generator to decide on the order of the colors in each stripe. The result is much more dynamic!

I posted a smaller representative of this series a few days ago. As in all my current series of paintings, there is randomness within the pattern, or vice versa. And even randomness itself sometimes produces patterns.

This is the precursor to the larger painting that I first posted. It may be surprising to learn that these colors are not mixed. I paint straight from the tube, and they even come from different manufacturers!

This is an updated version of one of my spiral designs. I doubled the number of stripes, which increased the optical effect of transparency. I like the irony of using flat areas of color to suggest depth.

I’m expanding the grid in this series in which I use a random number generator to make composition and color decisions. The result is a more complex maze of optical effects of transparency, light, and shadow.

Max Bill in the 1960s. Decades ago he fascinated and inspired me to learn more about abstract art.
He was a Swiss architect, artist, painter, typeface designer, industrial designer and graphic designer.

I often compose paintings at a small scale before moving up to a larger canvas size. This allows me to observe any unexpected color or design issues. I think this piece is challenging to me, but in good ways.
