History madam. Scribe for hire. Plus art, illustration, culture, fashion, food, friends. Mary Evans Picture Library. Glen of Imaal terrier owner. Mother of 3 people. Crisp addict. Co.Durham born; Wanstead dweller. Will finish my website one day.
An original Margaret Tarrant watercolour from the book ‘Joan in Flowerland’ on Antiques Roadshow just now. We represent all Tarrant’s work at Mary Evans Picture Library as part of an exclusive arrangement with the Medici Society so lovely to see this.

Oooh, Heath Robinson is on #antiquesroadshow with Peter Higginson. My book ‘It’s all a bit Heath Robinson’ is about his WW1 cartoons (I also give a talk on this!) and nice to hear a mention of the Heath Robinson Museum in Pinner where I did my John Hassall exhibition in 2021.

Finished #couchto5k this week. Yay me. With thanks to Steve Cram for his support along the way.

Off to Colchester (to see my granddaughter - and son & daughter-in-law!). Thank you to the lady at Manor Park who went out of her way to hold the train doors for me as I dashed down the steps. It’s a small thing but heartening.

Mesmerised by the incredible symmetry of these beautiful dahlias we’ve grown this year. Nasturtium still going in the garden (as are many things) so a little luminous autumn posy for the mantelpiece.

Shocked by the news about Diane Keaton. Think it’s because she always looked fabulous, timeless, ageless. I know everyone will be sharing this picture, but, what a look. It really struck a chord with me as s teen. And she kind of stuck with that vibe all her life. Another great from my youth gone.

It’s National Curry Week so why not tuck into, er, a delicious tin of Brand’s Beef, Chicken or Veal curry? Complete with shameless cultural appropriation. (Found in The Tatler 1961 today).

Back from a trip up to Teesdale. Came back with a big chunk of Cotherstone cheese and one of these bad boys from Grant’s bakery in Corbridge. Never understood why peach melbas have never made it beyond the north east but suppose that’s what makes them special. #peachmelba

Have recently joined the Woodland Trust. Just got my welcome back. Didn’t expect to see Nile Rodgers on the cover of its magazine!

Wanstead Flats at 6:30am this morning.

Because I don’t have enough to do, an acquaintance has given me 10 massive quince & I have promised to make membrillo. Peeling them is taking ages & at this rate I’m going to miss University Challenge.

Hooray! Week 9 of #couchto5k and I’ve run 30 minutes tonight. Achilles hurt but other than that (which, admittedly, was all-consuming) felt quite good. Here I am in my 2012 Great North Run t-shirt, clinging to past glories.

Through some AI dark arts, Feargal was photographed at the London Pet Show and cartoonified.

Feargal & I have been representing the Glen of Imaal terrier at the London Pet Show Live today and as you can see he’s had a TERRIBLE time.

On my way to Twickenham for a wedding. On the tube, dressed like this, on my own. Have got to Waterloo & discovered no trains to Twickenham. Am now on train to Hounslow and then there is a RAIL REPLACEMENT SERVICE BUS. Ffs.

Oh bum. I would so love to go to this but am at a wedding on Saturday.

I’m getting heartily sick of these ‘I do this therefore you should listen to me and nothing else matters’ clickbait headline pronouncements from magazines these days. Very tiresome. I’m more likely to completely ignore the advice or not read it at all.

Just me at Mary Evans Picture Library this afternoon. Oh, and this fella in the kitchen sink.

Love all the names for Lanvin perfumes in this 1938 ad from Tatler all hinting at scandal and secrets. ‘My Sin’ - fabulous!

Also, a bounty of tomatoes and a randomly self-planted squash. (Neatly wrote self-published squash there).

Not a lot going on in my life at the moment other than work and other writing work so here are some pics of things in our garden this morning.

We neglected the dahlia bulbs I bought this year & by the time we planted them they were looking pretty desiccated & I didn’t hold out much hope but…look. Oh me of little faith.

Feeling slightly smug that on this page in Tatler featuring home stuff inspired by Cecil Beaton & Oliver Messel, they’ve included Little Greene’s Yellow Pink paint - the colour of our hallway since 2021.

Duchess of Kent sketched by society osteopath Stephen Ward at Kensington Palace in May 1961, just a few weeks before her wedding to the Duke at York Minster. Ward drew several members of the royal family for the Illustrated London News that year but 2 years later was embroiled in the Profumo Affair.
