Ayuso finally spoke up, a hint of bitterness in his own strained voice;
"I see."
A brief, uncomfortable silence stirred between the two, only the soft chatter of other passengers served to interrupt it.

Finally silently snapping, Andrew lead the question that repeated in his head. “I thought you said you had no one at home for you, Mr. Ayuso?”
The cowboy’s silence was unreadable.
The conductor kept walking, as if the question in this context was natural.

The conductor responded to Ayuso dry and short. He believes that Kevin may have caught onto this sudden shift in mood, as he no longer piped up as much on the way back to their shared room.
The bitterness he felt never ceased nipping at the back of his mind.

Despite this feeling gnawing at his very being, Andrew swallowed himself as he lead Kevin back inside, keeping an eye on his footing.
The corridors of the train cars have never felt so suffocating than in this moment as the two traversed in almost silence.

He too, quickly masked, giving a slight assuring smile to the cowboy who was just in tears.
“We oughtta head back inside.” He said, his thick accent peaking.
As typical, the conductor nodded, noting the other's pink cheeks and nose. “You would not have lasted much longer out here anyway.”
October 19, 2024 at 2:21 AM
Andrew should have known better to believe he held such significance to this man.
Kreiss let the cowboy recollect himself in silence, tears of a man who never finished grieving were wiped away with a borrowed sleeve.
Kevin recomposed himself as bitterness teased the conductor.

- swiftly faded to disappointment upon the realization that he was not the addressee.
Angelina. The blond repeated the name in his mind, ripping his gaze away from the cowboy.
There it is. Of course. It’s no surprise the man still had attachments. Of course.
October 19, 2024 at 2:17 AM
Ayuso turned his gaze to the night sky, the black abyss brimming with thousands of stars as far as it could be seen. “Aren’t they, Angelina?”
The first part of the name caught the conductor’s attention, though whatever feeling that made his heart jump--
October 19, 2024 at 2:14 AM
The next time he glanced at the cowboy, tears were quickly noticed, pricking at the man’s eyes and threatening to fall. He absentmindedly ran a hand along the rope at his side, and pulled the coat tighter around himself.
“The stars are beautiful out tonight,”
October 19, 2024 at 2:13 AM
At some point he trailed off, and began to look out over the passing scenery.
Andrew found himself reaching out for him, to give him a touch of comfort, but hesitates, eventually pulling back to himself before he could let his feelings decide his actions.

didn’t know any better.
The two chatted for a while— mostly Ayuso. Andrew liked to listen to the American’s ramblings, though it was hard for him to follow at times. Some questions lead to others and the cowboy found himself reminiscing.
October 19, 2024 at 2:11 AM
Mr. Ayuso makes a mild fuss, insisting he would be alright without it. Mentioning, he quote “Wouldn’t want you to get sick out here.”
Another cold glare was given in response, and he took it without another complaint. A quiet thank you was uttered from the man, almost bashful if the conductor --

The poor vagrant- carrying only essentials, with no plan to have been traveling so far north - was ill equipped to deal with such weather. His warmest clothing didn’t even begin to suffice.
The conductor sighs, and shrugs off his outermost coat, offering it to the cowboy without making eye contact.
October 19, 2024 at 2:08 AM
It was lucky the cowboy seemed to enjoy his company, strange as it may be.
Hardly two minutes had passed before, Kevin, unused to such cold, made complaint; as if he wasn’t the one who wanted to be up here in the first place.
October 19, 2024 at 2:07 AM
The time it took was no small bit, but with a glare to the cowboy, and a nervous smile to the conductor, it managed to be pried open.
Mr. Kreiss was the first to climb atop the roof, watching as the other made his way up. He would be there to ensure his safety, nothing more.
