The Debate Commission should be ashamed of how tonight has gone. Even if you believe that the scrum should have all voices - outlets like Rebel news getting 5:1 representation to real media is just plain wrong.

Right-wing media overrepresented in Carney's scrum Carney was at the mic first during post-debate scrums. He took questions from several reporters, including from right-wing media organizations Rebel News, Juno News and True North. He was asked about how many genders there are and whether Justin Trudeau was a good prime minister. Rebel, Juno and True North are not members of the parliamentary press gallery and don’t travel with any of the campaigns. The debates are usually one of their only opportunities to ask questions of leaders. Jagmeet Singh has refused to answer Rebel News’ questions. It is remarkable that Rebel News is here at all: The company, Rebel News Network Ltd, is actually registered as a third-party advertiser in this election. According to an interim filing with Elections Canada, Rebel spent more than $8,000 to hire an American voter-contact firm, reporting this as “partisan activity.” Ezra Levant, Rebel founder and owner, told me in an email today that this was a “prophylactic registration.” But the fact is, Rebel is a conspiratorial partisan outlet that spreads misinformation and actively campaigns against candidates it doesn’t like. This isn’t journalism and it’s obscene that the Debate Commission let them on — and even more wild that it allowed so many of their faux-journalists to hijack these press conferences. Poilievre now scrumming with reporters The Conservative leader is taking questions from Rebel News, unlike Singh. Poilievre says the Conservatives are the only party prepared to protect freedom of the press in response to a question from Rebel News.

Justin Trudeau will be remembered for his time as Prime Minister. The heated debates of the Carbon Tax really cloud some of the real achievements his government brought through. Reduction in Child Poverty, National Dental and Prescription coverage (limited, and only with the support of the NDP)
